The Father You Always Wanted
Republished From
There is not an area of greater confusion than religion! But Jesus Christ came to simplify everything. He came to show us what God is really like. And the image of God that He revealed is surprising! God is the Father you always wanted!

The Sermon on the Mount is not just a discourse on Christian ethics.  It’s a revelation of the nature of God.  Jesus is giving us a snapshot of what His Father is like and the kind of life that the Father’s offspring will be capable of, once they are born of  Him by faith and growing in Christ!  But, it’s one particular verse that sends my spirit soaring:

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”  (Luke 6:36)

This is basically the synopsis of the sermon.  This single verse sums up redemptive history!  It does so because it reveals three major things: 1) God’s preferred title; 2) God’s most essential attribute; and 3) the certainty of a family that will bear His name and nature!

Have you recognized that Jesus was intent on revealing God as a Father?  Fatherhood and sonship are mutually dependent realities.  If God is most essentially a Father, then it is essential for a son to be revealed.  And not just any son!  It would be a son of the same kind, the same nature.  “Father” is the title that God desires!

Have you recognized that God’s extravagant love, known most fully through demonstrated mercy, is His most essential attribute?  Have you considered that for this glorious aspect of God’s nature to be seen and savored by His creatures, there would of necessity have to be human failure to precipitate it?  Mercy needs a backdrop of failure (and the wrath it demands) before it can be recognized and received.  Without sin, a Savior, and a Cross, we could not know the most essential attribute of our God: mercy!  Glory!!  The Cross was not Plan B!

Finally, don’t miss the personal pronoun: “your Father!”  It’s not “My Father” (Jesus alone), but “your Father!”  That speaks of a family.  Hebrews 2:10 tell us that Christ came to bring many sons back to the Father’s glory!

Merciful Father.  Kind, compassionate, patient, generous, affirming, and merciful - He is truly a wonderful Father!  Do you know Him as such?  If not, you are drawing up far short of what He wants for you!  He’s not mean and angry with you!  If you’ve come to Him through Christ, there is no possibility of future wrath or condemnation!  This is truly good news - a message of reconciliation that Christ has commissioned us to be spreading all over the world!

More About God’s Preferred Title:  Father

O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.  John 17:25-26

Jesus shows us the primary key to experiencing the magnificent love of God.  It is directly tied to the revelation of God’s preferred title or name.  What name is it that Jesus so uniquely revealed?

The answer is right there in the text: “Father.”  This was the name that Jesus used, almost exclusively, for God!  And, this was the glorious revelation of God that Jesus came to give: “If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father.”  God is glorious, almighty, and all-powerful, but ultimately, He’s a Father!  And not just any kind of Father!  He’s incredibly patient, kind, trustworthy, generous, compassionate, and merciful.

Now get this: what name/title for God does the Holy Spirit reveal to and inspire within the hearts of God’s children?

…you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba!  Father!”  Romans 8:15

Or explained in a different way, Paul goes on in the next verse:

The Spirit Himself bears witness with out spirits
that we are c
hildren of God.  Romans 8:16

We can call God our dear Daddy/Father because we have heard Him call us His beloved sons and daughters!

Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us,
that we should be called children of God; and such we are…
  1 John 3:1

The Father calls us His sons and daughters!  The Father shows His love for us by speaking within our hearts and confirming and affirming that we are His beloved children in Christ Jesus!

This is the fountainhead of divine love.  Without the Father’s voice of love and affirmation being recognized down in your heart, love is just a concept.  But, we were made to hear His voice, the Fatherly voice of love!

This is the good news message that we are commissioned to preach around the world.  Prodigals can come home to a loving, forgiving, and generous Daddy God.  This is the title He has reserved to be used when referring to Him for the rest of eternity!  Glory to God!

If you are not relating to God on such a level, then you are drawing up short of your destiny as a beloved son or daughter of the Most High.  If the voice of God in your life could not be characterized as warmly affectionate, affirming, and fatherly, then you are not listening to the right voice!

I pray that by the power of the Holy Spirit of adoption, who comes into your heart to impart the Father’s voice, you may be built up and established in His incredible love for you – a love that casts out all fear.  Amen.
