Reflection 111 - Marriage and Work
It was a good life in the Garden of Eden. Every day God would stop by and walk with Adam and Eve. Can you picture it? Hanging out in the garden. Picking fruit to eat that was luscious was easy. Fruit was everywhere. I imagine the temperature was perfect. There was just the right amount of sun, water, and other elements. It was absolutely perfect.
“The Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 NIV

“God never expected the husband to seek God alone and leave his wife out of the equation.” Jack Serra

God’s original plan was to spend a lot of time with His people. He loved relationships and He loved stopping by for a visit with His first two people. He made it very clear. Eat what you want, but not from that one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. How hard could that be? Obviously, it wasn’t as easy as we might think.

The point here is not about the fall as much as it is about God wanting to spend time with Adam and Eve, not just Adam. Why? Even before the fall, man had free will and he could choose to protect his wife so they could have a great relationship with God or ignore her. Adam ignored her and let the fall begin.

The same is true for us today. As husbands, we need to seek God with our wife or we will leave her behind. If we do that, God won’t be able to find the two of us so He can visit with us. If we, as husbands, are pursuing God without our wives, we will surely fall just as Adam did.

Our problem today is that we have made a relationship with God a personal one. While that is true, if we are married, He really wants to visit with us as a couple as well. It’s the husband’s responsibility to make sure that happens. If you do, your wife will follow your lead.

Let's pray in the Name of Jesus Christ: Lord, in marriage You have made us one. Help us to understand how You want us to seek You as one. Amen.
