Reflection 30 - Considering Her Interests Equal to Your Own
Without revisiting everything about our marriage, I can simply say that I rarely, if ever, considered AJís interests. Now donít confuse my caring for her, protecting her and providing for her as looking out for HER interests. I donít know that I ever asked her what her interests were, at least, not in the beginning of our marriage...

ďEach of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.Ē Philippians 2:4 NIV

Without revisiting everything about our marriage, I can simply say that I rarely, if ever, considered AJís interests. Now donít confuse my caring for her, protecting her and providing for her as looking out for HER interests. I donít know that I ever asked her what her interests were, at least, not in the beginning of our marriage. The fact is I left her in the dust as I pursued my interests. This was not intentional. I thought my interests were the interests of my wife and kids. Wrong!!! Every marriage has mutual interests and that is what I was attempting to provide. This is not what Paul is referring to here.

Each of us has unique interests in this life and unfortunately they are often put away when we get married. Becoming one in Christ doesnít mean we give up our interests. They are to be lifted up in joy. God didnít ask any of us to give up our interests when we got married. I believe He wants us to consider one anotherís interests and determine how each of us can help the other achieve their interests.

Sometimes they will work together and other times they will be as separate as you can imagine. Remember, her interests are as important to God as yours are. My interests are working with marketplace leaders like you and my wifeís interests are about the poor and needy.

What are your wife's interests? I was surprised to know that AJ would love to drive a racecar. I was also surprised that she wants to go to Florence and see the Tuscany region. Early in our marriage she never wanted to leave the USA. Now she wants to travel. What does that tell you? Interests change. Keep asking what hers are. You wonít be sorry.

Let's pray in the Name of Jesus Christ: Lord, you have created my spouse uniquely and with interests that can be different than mine. May I take into account her interests as with mine. Amen.
